Perception

One thing that really stood out to me in this weeks lessons was perception. According to the dictionary, perception is defined as; 1) a result of perceiving 2) awareness of the elements of the environment through physical sensation.

Perception

Perception is so fascinating to me, because for one every single one of us tend to see things differently no matter what it is, and in the world we live in today, lots of things try and mess with how we view things, even simple little works of art aren's always exactly how you perceive them to be.

From the powerpoint, it says that perception illustrates how we perceive the whole picture compared to the individual parts, and that our minds bring order and form to stimuli by following certain rules for grouping. These different groupings consist of proximity, similarity, continuity, and closure.

Examples

How many legs does the elephant have?

Is the face of the box in the bottom left corner or the top right?

Is the third picture a vase or two faces?

Everyday Life

After doing further research I found that perception effects our every day lives. It effects how you view things and how others view you. Perception is all around us and the culture we grew up in and how we were raised plays major roles in how we view everyday things.

A good article I found about this can be found here

Overall sensation is a very fascinating topic to me. From it being the way we view things, to how people like to trick us with paintings and works of art never fails to keep me from always enjoying looking over different ways of perceiving things.

  1. Brandon, I thought that this blog was very interesting. My favorite part of this blog is the examples section. It was also very smart how you incorporated the link in the article. I look forward to reading more of your blogs in the future they are always very interesting!

  2. Brandon,
You did a fantastic job explaining and illustrating perception. I also agree with you that our perceptions can be different depending on our life experiences. The pictures on one of the lecture videos tricked me where it looked like object that were 4 dimensional but they were only paintings of objects. The object that I remember was the shoe. I perceived the objects shown on the video as real when they were only drawings.

    1. The way perception works hand in hand with all of our senses is remarkable. In addition, its even more crazy that our perception can be tricked. The pictures you provided definitely messed with my perception but was a fun activity to take part in. Acknowledging that everyone has a different view of perception was a great truth to put into your blog. I forget about that sometimes so it was good to be reminded before reading all the way through your blog!

  3. The way we see things is conditioned by aspects of our lives and this is often difficult to perceive, but it is finally the way we perceive. The example with the elephant is a good example of this, many can give different values to this appreciation, and while we agree this will generate a small - great controversy. Something similar to what we live in the real world!
